Welcome to SKY!
The SKY Foundation (Soweto Kliptown Youth) is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating self-respect and self-worth in the children and young adults of Kliptown, the poorest township within Soweto, South Africa. It does so by providing a safe-haven, where essential services, like meals, mentorship, and support, are offered.
[News, June of 2007: Bob Nameng, founder of SKY, has been recently honored by CNN as a hero (CNN Heroes Bob Nameng). See Bob's video message video message too!]
Some Facts:
Kliptown is a crowded informal settlement of 45,000 people. It is the birthplace of the Freedom Charter of 1955, the beginning of a long battle against Apartheid. While it holds great South Africa historic importance, it maintains high unemployment, little infrastructure (for example, water is obtained from eighteen water spigots scattered throughout the community), no schools, no libraries, no clinics. HIV/AIDS remains a pandemic of massive proportions.
These conditions continue to feed a cycle of hopelessness for our children. This must end—NOW!
SKY is just one micro-program trying to stop this cycle for those who we can reach—NOW!
Our Vision: “To ensure and encourage a freethinking society with maximum utilization of human creativity.”
Our Mission: “To create altruistic education programmes that address the needs of community and eradicate poverty and illiteracy. To advise and support learnership and vocational programmes geared to help empower young people and the community.”
Our Motto: “Who knows it feels it, let your light shine!”
We at SKY are dedicated to building light in our children.
All we ask is that you tour our website. Meet our people. Meet our children. See what we are accomplishing. Learn the many ways you can assist us. Discover how you can let your light shine.
Our heartfelt gratitude!
Your Friends from SKY
