About Bob Nameng and the founding of SKY

CNN Hero - Bob NamengThe deteriorating, socio-economic conditions prevailing during the 1980’s in the informal settlement of Kliptown, an impoverished area within struggling Soweto, prompted action. In response to the growing despair he saw around him, Bob Nameng, known as “Little Bob”, established SKY in 1987. It stands for Soweto Kliptown Youth, and under Little Bob’s leadership, it grew into a respected, registered, non-profit organization by 2001.

And now, June 2007, Bob has been honored by CNN as a hero (CNN Heroes Bob Nameng). See Bob's video message video message!

His purpose was simple: give kids a place to nurture self-respect. The challenge was great. Crush the source of abject and pervasive poverty by addressing issues pertaining to poverty,  by eradicating illiteracy and ignorance, and by creating vocational and life-skill programmes, as well as engaging in arts, culture, sports and recreation.

Since 2001,  Little Bob and others (pictured: Sarah Langa), with the help of institutions like the NBA, have grown SKY into a model of success. SKY  is now a proud participant in the government’s micro-economic programme to create a better life for all through the Accelerated Shared Growth Initiative of South Africa (ASGISA) in order to address issues of social-economic development.
